Crab claws are considered a delicacy, while the crab body itself is not always appreciated by customers. That’s why the claws are valuable to the fishing industry, while the body is harder to sell. And to ensure that fishermen don’t simply break off the claws and throw the clawless crabs back into the sea, there are, in Sweden, regulations governing the sale of crabs.
Although a general ban on bottom trawling in marine protected areas has been in force since 1 July this year, exceptions are now being made. The Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management has today decided that shrimp fishing may continue in Kosterfjorden-Väderöfjorden for an indefinite period. In Gullmarsfjorden, shrimp fishing is to be phased out and completely banned by July 2027.
