Dismissed scientists in US launch a new independent website for climate data
The information on the new platform http://www.climate.us is based on data from the formerly popular federal website Climate.gov, which was run by NOAA. (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) One of the government agencies that has seen its budget drastically cut since Donald Trump returned to power in January 2025.
“Reliable climate information should not disappear when political changes occur,” says Rebecca Lindsey, chief executive of Climate.us.
It is former NOAA staff who are making the material available and ensuring that the climate information remains accurate, accessible and scientifically rigorous.
According to the researchers, the launch reflects strong public demand for reliable climate information. A third of Climate.us’s funding comes from small donations, and more than 80 researchers have volunteered as peer reviewers.
“Climate.us is building an independent, sustainable platform so that people can continue to find the data and information they need to understand and discuss the climate, as well as to teach, report, plan, prepare and make informed decisions.”
The new website includes, amongst other things, Climate.gov’s 15-year archive of climate news and reports, expert blogs, visual status reports on key climate indicators, maps and data guides, as well as teaching materials.
