The last Baltic cod – The quest for the survival of the inland sea’s native species
His writing stems from a deep love for cod and the sea, and a fierce anger at a political system that has favoured a select few at the expense of the public good.
Peter Löfgren’s debut book, ” The Last Baltic Cod – The Quest for the survival of the Inland Sea’s Native Species” is a call to action in the form of a non-fiction account, urging us to protect our endangered inland sea and its fish.
After countless television reports and documentaries about the serious situation, he has now put it all down in writing, and his pen is on fire
‘Only now are politicians realising that there might well be – in fact, there are quite a lot of people out there – who want a clean, healthy sea teeming with fish, and that could well win us votes. And ultimately, that’s what counts. It doesn’t have to be about money. People in Sweden value their sea.’
In a conversation with Marika Griehsel during Almedals Week on Gotland, the former foreign correspondent describes how he first encountered cod as a child and why a small fish bone, thousands of years old, could play a vital role in saving the Baltic Sea’s native inhabitants.
