US Stockpiled Norwegian Salmon Ahead of Tariff Announcement

03 April, 2025

Norway’s seafood exports to the US increased by 56% in the first quarter of the year, ahead of President Donald Trump’s decision on tariffs.

Sales to the US accounted for 11 per cent of total seafood exports from Norway during the period, which amounted to a record NOK 44 billion.

The increase in exports is thought to be partly due to seafood companies in the US stockpiling in anticipation of the 15% tariffs now imposed on products from Norway.

Norway produces nearly half of the world’s farmed salmon. The farming conditions in the sea and fjords are considered ideal and are difficult to replicate elsewhere in the world.

In total, Norway exported more than 285,000 tonnes of salmon in the first quarter, of which around 22,000 tonnes were sent to the United States.
