Shark trapped in canal – evacuation successful

22 Oct, 2026

A three-metre-long shark, which usually lives in tropical climates, had been trapped for several weeks in an artificial canal in south-eastern South Korea. On Wednesday, the authorities made a third attempt to lure it out – and it was successful.

The shark was discovered last month, and two previous attempts to lure it back out to sea using water jets and nets were unsuccessful.

However, the third attempt, carried out on Wednesday, went according to plan, and the shark has left the canal.

The initial hope was that the shark would find its way back to the sea on its own, but as the water temperature drops, concerns about its welfare are growing.

The shark has attracted a great deal of interest, and more than 1.6 million people have visited the canal to see it.
