Zoo Appeals for Money – Otherwise the Whales will be Killed
30 beluga whales at a closed zoo in Canada are threatened with euthanasia. Since the authorities stopped the export of the animals, the facility is appealing for emergency financial aid so that the whales can continue to live.
The Marineland animal park near Niagara Falls in Ontario closed last year, but still has the country’s last whales in captivity.
Now the money is running out, and without immediate financial support or export permits, the zoo will be ‘faced with the devastating decision to euthanise the animals,’ writes Marineland, which claims that this would be a direct consequence of the fisheries minister’s decision not to approve exports.
The plan was to send the animals to a Chinese amusement park, but the application for an export permit was recently rejected by the authorities. Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson does not want the beluga whales to be kept in captivity or used for entertainment, reports CBC.
She recently said in an interview that she has ‘found out white whales in the eye’ and felt that they belong in the sea.
