Barrel jellyfish are invading the Swedish west coast

Every year, there are usually isolated reports of barrel jellyfish sightings on the Swedish west coast, but this year there have been significantly more sightings than usual. `There’s no doubt it’s a huge number,´ says marine biologist Martin Stjernstedt at Havets hus in Lysekil.

On Sweden's west coast lies the Western Sea with Sweden's saltiest water and the largest marine biodiversity. The Western Sea includes both Kattegat, Skagerrak, and the Øresund and is home to species such as mackerel, kelp, octopus, sea stars, corals, dolphins, and a total of 17 species of sharks.
