The search for sites in Sweden where carbon dioxide can be stored beneath the seabed has been underway for three years. Two potential sites have now been identified. ‘We've received some excellent samples and the results so far are very promising,’ says Sofie Lindström of the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU).
You can't see it above the surface, and that's a big problem, because what's happening below the surface is like an ongoing disaster. Until now, the ocean has been our great savior, absorbing almost all the excess energy we've released. But there's a limit to what the ocean can absorb, and it seems like we've exceeded it now.
"We know approximately how much the fish poop, how much carbon it contains and also how quickly the feces reach the bottom. Against this background, we therefore wanted to investigate how much impact commercial fishing has on carbon storage in the ocean", says Daniele Bianchi from the University of California
