Pollution Turns Pondang’s Fishing Waters Yellow: ‘Far Fewer Fish Now’

13 Nov, 2025

Pondang is a fisherman in Bajau Laut, located in Wakatobi National Park in Indonesia. Since he was born, he has had a strong connection to the sea.

‘Sometimes I can sense when the weather is going to turn bad, because I am so connected to the sea,’ he says.

Where he lives, the water used to be blue and clear, with lots of fish. But the colour of the sea has changed, and the fish have disappeared as a result of human impact.

This report is part of the documentary ‘Voices of our Ocean’, which is being shown in connection with the UN’s ongoing climate summit in Brazil. In their own words and with selected images, they talk about their relationship with the sea, the urgent need to protect it and how climate change is affecting and transforming their lives. Hear each of them share their story.
