Massive Iceberg Drifts Towards Penguin Island (TT)

The world’s largest iceberg is drifting towards an island where it risks disturbing penguin chicks and seals, a scientist warns.

The iceberg – which is more than twice the size of London – is slowly moving from Antarctica towards a possible collision with South Georgia, a place where many animals breed.

Satellite imagery suggests that the ice mass is not breaking into smaller pieces, and while it is difficult to predict where it will end up, it now looks like it will reach shallower waters off South Georgia within two to four weeks, according to oceanographer Andrew Meijers.

At worst, it could affect seals and penguins trying to feed their young on the island, according to Mr Meijers.

South Georgia is a British territory located around 1 400 kilometres east of the Falkland Islands.
