EU and UK agree on fishing quotas
The EU and the UK have agreed on fishing quotas for 2022 in the waters between the EU and the UK after Brexit.
The question of how much fish should be taken up and by whom has been both protracted and infected. But now an agreement has been reached, announced the EU’s Fisheries Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius on Twitter.
“We have reached an agreement with Great Britain on fishing in 2022,” he writes.
The agreement covers all the fishing waters that are shared between the UK and the EU, and is based on the best available scientific advice that could be obtained, he states.
The agreement will take effect from 1 January 2022.
But the agreement receives criticism from environmental organizations. They think it takes too much into account short-term financial gains instead of looking at long-term effects for the environment and fish stocks.
