    Enforcement May Discourage Anglers

    Enforcement May Discourage Anglers

The government report ‘Modernised Fisheries Legislation,’ which was submitted to the Swedish government last week, will enable major changes for recreational fishermen in Sweden. Among other things, it proposes mandatory catch reporting when fishing in state-managed waters. Göran Sundblad, a researcher at SLU, runs the Spöreg project – an app where anglers can voluntarily report their catches for research purposes.

The Invasive Humpback Salmon is Back in Sweden

The Invasive Humpback Salmon is Back in Sweden

The invasive humpback salmon has once again been observed in Swedish waterways, most recently in the Ätran River in Halland. The species has large spawning migrations and its impact on ecosystems is not yet known. It is therefore considered a potential threat to the already severely depleted Swedish Atlantic salmon. Researchers and authorities want to stop its spread before it is too late.

Counting Seal Pups in the Baltic Sea

How are the gray seal pups doing? We’re about to find out. In a new project, researchers from Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the Swedish Museum of Natural History and University of Gothenburg are collecting footage of the pups in the Baltic Sea. Using drones, they are measuring the length, girth and weight of the pups to get an overview of their condition when they are weaned from their mothers. The project will run for three years.

Shoot the seal – or stop industrial fishing?

I am now forbidden to fish for cod and the pike has disappeared from my bay. I'm looking for scapegoats. Who is responsible for the condition below the surface in the Baltic Sea? Small-scale professional fishermen along the east coast have been raising the alarm for several years that the herring has declined sharply. At the same time, the large-scale trawling in the open sea has continued to catch large quantities, which have gone directly to the fishmeal factories in Denmark.

    Lobster fishing threatened

It’s now been scientifically proven. If you stop fishing, the number of fish increases! A new report from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) confirms that no-take zones enhance fish populations and combat the effects of eutrophication.

    No tourists – no guillemots

When society was put on pause during the pandemic, many people's opinion was that nature and wildlife would now have a chance to recover. But for the herring pigs on Stora Karlsö, it was the other way around – the missing tourists
