No Whaling in Iceland this Year
Iceland’s only active whale hunting company, Hvalur, is not going to hunt whales this summer, reports Morgunbladid.
– As we see the situation, Hvalur has no alternative but to wait and hope for better times, says the company’s CEO Kristjan Loftsson.
– The reason is falling product prices in Japan, which is the company’s main market. Unrest and uncertainty on the world markets are also exacerbating the situation, Loftsson emphasises.
This is the second year in a row that whaling has been cancelled. Hvalur will reassess the situation ahead of next year’s season.
The Icelandic whaling season usually runs from mid-June to September.
Iceland, Norway and Japan are the only countries in the world that still allow commercial whaling. The hunt is condemned by many animal rights groups.
