Fishing Agreement Finalised – Lower Quotas for Cod
After a night of negotiations, EU countries have agreed on a new fisheries agreement.
Quotas for cod will be reduced in the southernmost North Sea, among other areas.
The agreement, which was negotiated over two days, covers sea areas in the Atlantic, North Sea, Mediterranean and Black Sea. Among other things, it means that cod will be protected and quotas will be reduced by 44 per cent in the southernmost parts of the North Sea.sjön.
Quotas for sole will also be reduced by 44 per cent in the Skagerrak, Kattegat and the westernmost parts of the Baltic Sea.
At the same time, the quota for lobsters in the Bay of Biscay is increasing by 54 per cent.
Denmark’s Minister for Fisheries Jacob Jensen, who led the negotiations during Denmark’s EU Presidency, says that reaching an agreement was not easy.
‘I believe we have reached a compromise that ensures a balance between biological advice and, at the same time, provides the best possible framework for sustainable fishing in the future,’ he said in a press release.
