“Ecosystem Collapse Threatens UK National Security”

A new report by the country’s intelligence chiefs states that the nation’s security is threatened by the climate crisis, something that the Guardian was the first to report on. And the threat, they say, is much closer in time than we realise.

Intelligence chiefs point to important natural ecosystems that are threatening to collapse, with devastating consequences for food supplies. This in turn will lead to economic disaster and a serious threat to the country’s security.

Food supply chains are already under severe pressure, resulting in rising raw material prices.

The report was due to be launched on Thursday, but The Guardian reports that it has been blocked by number 10 because the government is unwilling to tackle the major issues it raises.

For example, they write, the British government has cut back on development aid that could be used to stabilise the countries most vulnerable to the climate crisis.

The threats to the food industry are perhaps the most obvious, but according to the report, the collapse of ecosystems will affect other sectors just as severely. This includes the clothing and fashion industry, which manufactures in countries that are the first to be affected by climate change, resulting in increased migration.

Perhaps the most worrying aspect of the report is that the scenario they describe is not something that will happen in an uncertain future; according to intelligence chiefs, it will happen within the next few years.
