Historical Polish Oil Discovery in the Baltic Sea
An oil field described as the largest ever found in Poland has been discovered off the coast of Świnoujście, reports Dagens PS.
The port city in northwestern Poland is located on the Baltic Sea, 170 km south of Ystad, and the deposit is located six kilometers off the coast.
This discovery will significantly impact Poland’s economy and independence in terms of fossil fuel supply, according to energy expert Sławomir Raszewski, speaking to Polish public service broadcaster TVP, as reported by Ystads Allehanda.
The Canadian company Central European Petroleum (CEP) claims to have made the discovery after test drilling and analysis.
The area, known as Wolin East, is estimated to contain 33 million tons of crude oil and 27 billion cubic meters of natural gas, of which 22 million tons and 5 billion cubic meters, respectively, are believed to be recoverable.
“If this discovery is confirmed, Wolin East could be the largest deposit of crude oil and natural gas ever discovered in Poland,” Poland’s chief geologist Krzysztof Galos told Euronews.
The Polish news agency PAP describes the discovery as one of the largest in Europe in the last ten years.
Rolf G Skaar, CEO of CEP, said in a press release that the discovery “represents a joint opportunity to unlock the full geological and energy potential of the Baltic Sea.”
